1tsp sesame oil
-
1 tsp dark soy sauce
-
1/4 tsp salt
- ½ tsp white pepper
-
1 small egg
-
1 tsp cornflour
-
Approx. 8 tbsp sesame seeds on a lipped plate
Sauce

2 tbsp of Suzie’s chilli oil
-
4 tbsp hoisin sauce
-
2 Garlic cloves minced
-
2 tsp sugar
-
Splash of water
- Add in more chili flakes if you want it super spicy
Suzie’s Chilli oil (makes 1 large jar or 2 medium jars or 3 small jars)
- 250ml ground nut oil OR vegetable oil (NOT olive oil)
-
4 tbsp sesame seeds toasted
-
1 heaped tbsp of chili flakes
-
1 tsp chili powder
-
½ tsp five spice
-
2 cloves of Garlic minced
-
½ tsp white pepper
-
½ tsp salt
-
3 tbsp dark soy sauce
-
Veg oil
-
Spring onions sliced for garnishing
- Extra sesame seeds for garnishing
Directions for Use
Suzie’s Chilli Oil
Step 1: Put the 250ml of groundnut oil into a pan and bring to the boil. To check it is ready, dip the end of the wooden spoon into the hot oil, if bubbles fizz straight away around the spoon it is ready. Turn off the heat. Leave to sit for a couple of minutes.
Step 2: Then toss the sesame seeds in a dry pan till they turn slightly golden (it will literally take a couple of minutes and also they burn really quickly …so do not walk away from the pan!)
Step 3: In a clean large jar place the sesame seeds, chilli flakes, chilli, five spice, sesame oil, garlic, pepper, salt. Then carefully pour the hot oil into the jar, it will sizzle all the ingredients in the jar and it will smell amazing!
Crispy Chilli Tofu
Step 1: In a bowl mix the sesame oil, dark soy sauce, salt, pepper, cornflour, egg and whisk with a fork. Then toss the tofu and mix. Leave it to sit for at least 5 mins.
Step 2: Heat up about 4 tbsp of oil in wok, then carefully take each piece of marinated tofu and dip into the sesame seeds (cover all sides) – using chopsticks helps to avoid your fingers getting covered. Then fry the tofu in batches, making sure all sides are crunchy. Then lift out with tongs and put on kitchen paper.
Step 3: Wipe the wok clean with some kitchen paper and then add in the chilli oil, hoisin sauce, garlic, sugar, water and chilli flakes and let it bubble away till sticky and thick and then toss in the tofu for a couple of minutes. Then garnish.
