The great East Indiaman ships that delivered silk, spices, tea and porcelain to Europe also conveyed the adventurous to the Orient. Among them was the artist George Chinnery, who left Dublin to seek new subjects for his brush. His portraits of the traders of Canton and sketches of everyday life in southern China record a vanished time.
